On May 9, 2018, the County of Marin joined other jurisdictions in filing a complaint against opioid manufacturers and wholesalers, alleging that the industry promoted the use of opioids that they knew to be dangerous and addictive.

Plaintiffs’ attorneys have been busy this year sorting through documents, deposition transcripts, and data. Last week the County decided to name several members of the Sackler family, which owns privately-held Purdue Pharma and is listed among America’s wealthiest families. Purdue and the Sackler family recently agreed to pay $270 million in a similar lawsuit. Such settlements can help fund local strategies to address the epidemic.
